2025-11-19

On November 18, 2025, a lecture by VMU postdoctoral fellow Dr. Laima Vincė Sruoginis titled “What Is the Genre of Life-Writing and How Does It Differ from Memoir?”  took place at the President Valdas Adamkus Library-Museum.

During the lecture, Laima Vincė Sruoginis shared the experience she gained during her fellowship at the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing. The genres of life writing and memoir were compared, with their differences and boundaries highlighted. The concept of postmemory plays an important role in life writing, so the discussion addressed its significance and relevance in such narratives. The lecturer also shared her experience conducting a 20-week creative life-writing workshop for Americans of Lithuanian descent. She talked about what she learned from leading these workshops and how these skills can be applied when telling one’s own family stories. She presented several of her life-writing projects and discussed books based on family histories. The event also touched on the possibility of establishing a life-writing archive at the Lithuanian Emigration Institute and why such an archive could be important for researchers. A discussion followed the lecture.
