2024-04-18

On April 24, 2024, at 11 a.m., the presentation of Saulius Pivoras’ monograph “Lithuania in Swedish Baltic Policy 1917-1991: From Recognition to Its Renewal” (Kaunas: VMU, 2024) will take place at The Valdas Adamkus Presidential Library-Museum (S. Daukanto St. 25, Kaunas). The event will be attended by the author of the monograph, Prof. Dr. J. Vaičenonis, Assoc. Prof. Dr. G. Janauskas, Assoc. Prof. Dr. S. Rakutienė. You are all warmly invited.

Lithuania’s relations with Sweden throughout the 20th century developed unevenly. Few are aware of Sweden’s influence on Baltic unity projects and Lithuania’s relations with Poland, Sweden’s stance on the Soviet occupation in 1940, and the liberation from Soviet rule in 1990-1991. The presented book reveals Lithuania’s vulnerable image in Swedish internal and international politics during the interwar period, the motives behind Sweden’s support for the Vilnius and Klaipėda cases, largely unknown Swedish influence on Lithuania-Poland relations, and untapped opportunities for Sweden’s mediation to normalize them over four decades.
