The archives of the VMU Lithuanian Emigration Institute have been supplemented by the archive of the first Honorary Consul of the Republic of Lithuania in Australia and an active member of the Lithuanian community in Australia, Algis Kabaila (1925-2021). With the mediation of the Lithuanian Ambassador to Australia, Darius Degutis, these important archives were donated to the Institute by A. Kabaila’s son, Peter Rimas Kabaila.
The documents collected in Algis Kabaila’s archive are related to the activities of the Lithuanian community in Australia during the dawn of independence and after 1990, in their efforts to secure recognition of Lithuanian independence in Australia. They also cover the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Australia, as well as the establishment of the consulate in Australia and the activities of Algis Kabaila as the first Honorary Consul of the Republic of Lithuania in Australia (1991-1994).
In collaboration with the Valdas Adamkus Presidential Library-Museum, as part of a project funded by the Office of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, titled “Preservation and Interpretation of the Heritage Witnessing the Activities of the Lithuanian Reform Movement and Other Independence Restoration Processes of Lithuania,” this archive will be organized and made available to readers in the near future.
