On December 21, 2023, a lecture by Ambassador Dr. Dainius Junevičius on Lithuanian emigration to the Republic of South Africa (RSA) took place at Vytautas Magnus University’s Lithuanian Emigration Institute.

The lecture covered the main routes of Lithuanian emigration to the RSA. The three main cities where Lithuanians settled in the RSA were presented: Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, highlighting the differences in the Lithuanian way of life in each. The presentation also discussed the main occupations of Lithuanians in the RSA and the economic situation in the region.

The lecture explored the directions and reasons for Lithuanian emigration to the RSA from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century and how they evolved over time. Additionally, the Lithuanian Society in the Republic of South Africa and its activities were presented, taking into account the challenges of organization and communication in the conditions of significant distances.

The most active families and organizers of Lithuanian communities in the RSA were detailed, with a special emphasis on the role of the Kuisiai and Antanaiciai (Antonites) communities. The lecture also highlighted the significant meeting place for Lithuanians in the RSA – the Marija Kusienė House.
